Did you know that you are advised to consume only 4-5 teaspoons of sugar a day?
You’re probably not aware of how much sugar presents itself in the foods you consume like sweetened dairy, sugary drinks, candy. But, you know that too much sugar is bad for your health and yet you can’t help yourself but consume that much of it.
The human body is capable of taking in as much as 20 tablespoons of sugar a day. Sugar is such a silent addiction that one may not suspect it for causing anxiety disorders, weight gain or heart and liver complications among others. When we hit the limits, then our bodies do not remain so silent, they start to speak out!
Below are ways that our bodies may communicate for us to cut down or even give up that excessive sugar consumption.
Listening well and acting accordingly could save your life.
Defined as the intense desire to consume certain foods, cravings are caused by that part of the brain that is responsible for memory, pleasure, and reward. So, feed that sugar craving with some ice cream and in return the brain rewards you with pleasure. Only downside is that it never seems to end, it’s as bad as drug addiction.
Get rid of those sugary cravings by reducing stress levels, drinking plenty of water, maintain a diet of more filling foods like legumes, potatoes, bananas, and oats. Chewing on some gum which will keep your brain busy and making extra effort to control the portions of sugar consumed.
If you are not yet up there in age but start to notice your skin getting wrinkled and saggy, take that as a sign to give up that excessive sugar. By attaching itself to collagen and elastin; the protein fibers in your blood stream that keep your skin youthful and firm, Sugar builds harmful molecules called AGEs (Advanced Glycation End products) that age your skin.
Reduce your sugar intake to keep your skin firm, beautiful and wrinkle free. Also, take more water and tea, place some cucumber slices on your skin for 30minutes every day, and apply some olive oil and honey.
Increase in Fat
This is probably not news to you and if you are wondering why you never fill up from all that sugar intake, well, that’s because it does not contain any protein or fiber but calories. Sugar triggers the pancrease to produce more insulin. The more sugar you consume, the more insulin is produced and the more you weigh you put on, that’s the rule!
Cut that weight by sticking to a sugar free diet with more whole, unprocessed foods and hit the gym at least 3 times a week.
And here it is again “Candy can rot your teeth!” just as mummy said when you were little. As much as other foods have a role to play in creating teeth cavities, sugar will probably play the greatest. Why? Because the bacteria in our mouth loves that sugar probably more than you do. And as they feast on the sugar, they produce acid that wears away layers of your teeth hence cavities.
So if you can’t help yourself but eat even just a little candy, then take time brushing your teeth and floss every day. Don’t let the bacteria enjoy that sugar at your cost.
Sugar and inflammation serve an important part in moderating our bodies. However, too much sugar can result in too much internal inflammation which does not serve any useful purpose in our bodies.
Instead, too much inflammation has been linked to Gout especially in women and other serious illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease.
Excessive sugar intake can cause more severe health conditions like leaky gut syndrome. A condition where the intestinal lining is compromised allowing undigested food particles to leak into the bloodstream. The body thinking that it has been attacked by intruders sets its organs like the liver into overdrive producing a lot of Uric acid, a waste product convenient for hypertension and liver cancer.
Avoid getting into this mess by maintaining a balanced diet with foods rich in fibre like Broccoli, Black beans, Raspberries.
Fatigue Throughout the Day
Reminder! Sugar contains no protein or fiber and yet these are very key for our bodies to generate energy. So, if you start the day with a high intake of sugary products, well, expect to end the day on a low note feeling very fatigued even when you did not engage in much physical activity.
To avoid fatigue, give your body more sources of energy by eating more foods rich in fibre and protein, fruits and vegetables.
Nothing Tastes As good
If you are so addicted to that sugar that you cannot taste anything if a certain quantity of it is not added. It is probably time for you to test the saying that “once you stop eating so much sugar, your taste buds will adjust” to kill the addiction.
It will take a couple of weeks for this to happen but you will get there, consume a little less sugar a day to get your taste buds to taste that little sugar.
